Reuters FIFA World Cup 2002 news tickerJune 2002 Tui interactive media develops Reuters-branded Desktop Ticker for the FIFA World Cup 2002
"News tickers are not new, but our approach for this development is." says Russ Hendy, lead developer at Tui. “We wanted to create an application that was adaptable to both design changes and functional upgrades with maximum speed and minimum effort.”
The desktop ticker is based on data from an XML newsfeed and displays the latest headlines from Reuters to your PC. As a branded application it both raises brand profile and also allows users to click through headlines to the Reuters news site. This particular version was developed to coincide with the Korea/Japan 2002 FIFA World Cup.
Ilicco Elia, from Reuters Corporates and Media is enthusiastic about the Ticker "An application like this is great for raising brand awareness and presence. Since we launched, we've seen an enormous amount of interest and a significant increase in traffic to the site, directly from people using the ticker. It is an excellent way to further the association of Reuters with the reliable, impartial and speedy delivery of news."
"Tui have been a pleasure to work with, I consider them to be a central part of the team" he added.
Once you
download and install the application, the desktop ticker behaves as a moveable, floating window on your PC.
The ticker also exhibits several properties that offer friendlier usability:
it always remains in the foreground of the desktop it remembers its last position on the screen it can be 'docked' to either the top or bottom of the screen
The front-end development involved a range of technologies, each one relying on the other to communicate and update themselves. These technologies included XML, Macromedia Flash, and Win32 application programming in Borland Delphi.
